To Our Martial Arts Family,

This month I wish to write about a topic that was recently
covered in my Church.   For those who choose not to be
religiously inclined, please don’t jump to any conclusions....
read on!

One of the many benefits of Martial Arts Training – at least
those that are traditional and not just sport karate – are
the lessons introduced to the student related to developing
the inner self.   Sure, we work a great deal on the outer–self
 – through physical training, muscle and strength conditioning,
as well as balance and flexibility.    The development of the
inner self has been the largest blessing I have received as a
result of my three decades of training in martial arts.   In
particular, I am interested in developing students to create
sound judgment based upon moral values, solid character,
and positive attitudes full of self-confidence.  To me, the worst thing we can do to our selves or to our children is NOT to allow you/them to discover your/their fullest potential – physically…mentally…morally… and spiritually.

I am often asked how often I use martial as skills.  Those who ask are hoping (secretly) that I tell them about the time I took down three intruders without a scratch or they want to hear the last time I lept over the hood of some car to perform the perfectly executed flying side kick against some bad guy.   In reality, we train for these fateful experiences, but we also train ourselves mentally and spiritually to avoid the same.

So when I am asked how often I use my martial arts training, I always respond: Every Single Day.  I use my martial arts training and self-control when confronted with a negative person whom I never let get me down…I use my training when someone or something is keeping me from achieving my goals – and therefore, I apply perseverance and a “Never give Up Attitude.”     And most importantly, I know that when I look back on the lowest times of my life, I have used my martial arts training to help me focus…to tap into that inner fortitude…and to become the Peaceful Warrior that prevails through the 4 D’s: Dedication, Determination, Discipline and Desire!   The fifth letter is “G” in this sequence – which for me is “God.”   But I do not bring religion into our martial arts programs as this is best left to your personal choices and convictions.  Yet as the head of this Organization,  it is important to me that my students and Martial Arts Family understand my personal beliefs.

How do we develop lasting Values in Ourselves and in our Children?   There are the Five C’s:  Confidence, Convictions, Character, Compassion and Competence.

We are faced with circumstances and with people every day of our lives who challenge the 5 C’s within us.   Martial Arts Training helps create a solid foundation in which one can rely when faced with these challenges.     Yet these life skills are not developed in a week...a month…even a year.  Rather, they are developed over a period of years, and if we are fortunate, sometimes they continue developing over a lifetime…so that we continue to improve…to advance…to progress.  Because this is what we are built for.

You will find that we include one Life Skill discussion in every Super Kids Karate class.   We do this because I know that a well rounded student – both physically and mentally and spiritually – will have the “right stuff’ to face any challenge…to reach their goals sooner rather than later…and will lead a life of Moral Value, Character and Conviction.

So when do I use my martial arts training?  Every day – the 4 D’s plus G plus the 5’Cs.
